This is the catalyst for the life he now has to follow. Dylan throws himself off a roof but survives. He’s an average guy, his friend Mason is dating the love of his life Kira and he can’t continue being lonely. The story follows Dylan, a depressed grad student who hates his life and tries to commit suicide, again. It does it exactly what it says on the tin and then some. The synopsis on the back cover says “Kill or be Killed is a twisted look at the vigilante genre that also shines a black light on the fractured and unjust world all around us.” I’d read the individual issues digitally last year but wanted to experience the ‘story so far’ in print. Kill or be Killed volume 1 has just recently been released as a trade paperback and I had to pick up. Jump to 2016 and Ed Brubaker and artists Sean Phillips (pencils) and Elizabeth Breitweiser (colours) combine to deliver a truly remarkable and unique book. Ever since those Winter Soldier stories that Ed created were published I’ve had a huge respect for him and will always give his books a well deserved read. However, he’d been kept alive and brainwashed into being a Russian assassin called The Winter Soldier. This book was helmed by Mr Brubaker and brought back Cap’s sidekick, Bucky Barnes, who was thought dead during WWII. On the shelf was the new Captain America title. I was looking for something else to pick up alongside my usual dose of Deadpool, X-men and Spiderman. My first brush with Ed Brubaker was a few years back now, 2005 to be precise.
