Gabaldon's plot takes many turns and manages to include hidden gold, a secret son, bigamy, a kidnapping, pirates, black magic, a slave uprising, a crocodile, a séance, a shipwreck, a Chinaman with a foot fetish, and a hurricane. With the novel being in excess of a thousand pages, Gabaldon has plenty of room to tell her tale, so she manages to include much of what happened to Claire and Jamie in the intervening twenty years as well as the rollercoaster ride that is their lives since their reunion. ![]() In this instalment, Gabaldon mainly uses Claire as her first-person narrator, but Jamie, John Grey and Roger Wakefield also tell aspects of the story from their perspective. The synopsis on the back cover says “Kill or be Killed is a twisted look at the vigilante genre that also shines a black light on the fractured and unjust world all around us.” I’d read the individual issues digitally last year but wanted to experience the ‘story so far’ in print. Kill or be Killed volume 1 has just recently been released as a trade paperback and I had to pick up. Jump to 2016 and Ed Brubaker and artists Sean Phillips (pencils) and Elizabeth Breitweiser (colours) combine to deliver a truly remarkable and unique book. Ever since those Winter Soldier stories that Ed created were published I’ve had a huge respect for him and will always give his books a well deserved read. ![]() However, he’d been kept alive and brainwashed into being a Russian assassin called The Winter Soldier. This book was helmed by Mr Brubaker and brought back Cap’s sidekick, Bucky Barnes, who was thought dead during WWII. ![]() On the shelf was the new Captain America title. I was looking for something else to pick up alongside my usual dose of Deadpool, X-men and Spiderman. My first brush with Ed Brubaker was a few years back now, 2005 to be precise. ![]() ![]() The novel is preceded by two epigraphs that enable the reader to focus on recognizing the heroine’s destiny, which permeates the entire book. Epigraphs allow readers to focus on the idea of the whole work. The story’s credibility is achieved by its vivid and accurate description of the girl’s life, her thoughts, and her search for “herself,” which is facilitated by the author’s life experience. Neighbors eavesdrop, condemn and discuss each other, and even joy is seen as demonic.
